Cops: Disabled SUV turns out to be stolen

A 25-year-old Central Islip woman was arrested after police responding to a call of a disabled vehicle found that her vehicle was stolen -- and that there was an infant in the front seat, police said.

Maria Quintero was charged with felony criminal possession of stolen property and with endangering the welfare of a child, a misdemeanor, after her arrest on Montauk Highway in Eastport Friday at 10:28 p.m., Southampton Town police said. She was released on $250 bail and faces arraignment in Southampton Town Justice Court on Aug. 29.

Police said a caller reported the sport utility vehicle, a 2008 Acura MDX, stopped partially in the eastbound lane of Montauk Highway. Police said the infant, whose relationship to Quintero was not revealed, was in the front passenger seat. Police did not say whether the infant was in a car seat.

The vehicle had been reported stolen at the Suffolk County police Third Precinct earlier in the day, police said. Police did not say where -- or how -- Quintero got the vehicle.
