Cops: Driver drunk, lacked interlock device

A North Babylon man was arrested early Saturday on charges of driving while intoxicated and without an interlock device, Suffolk County police said.

Police said the driver, Gary Sabia, 24, Grenadon Lane, who has a prior DWI conviction, failed to signal while turning his 2004 Ford Mustang from Main Street to Holbrook Road in Patchogue. The driver kept speeding until Officer Jaime Bustamente, of the Fifth Precinct Community Oriented Police Enforcement, stopped him at 3:11 a.m. on Holbrook Road at Waverly Avenue, police said.

Sabia faces charges of felony driving while intoxicated; aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle; operating a motor vehicle without a required interlock device. The interlock device prevents a vehicle from starting if alcohol is detected.

Sabia's arraignment is scheduled for Saturday, at First District Court in Central Islip.

Suffolk County police said that between 4 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday they made a total of 17 arrests of individuals charged with driving while intoxicated or driving while ability impaired by drugs.
