Cops: Driver hits teen, flees, then returns

A 14-year-old girl crossing a street in Copiague was injured Thursday evening when she was struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old who police said left the scene but later returned.

The girl, whose identity was not released, was taken by North Lindenhurst Fire Department ambulance to Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The driver of the 1999 Nissan Altima was identified as Kevin Manzanares of North Amityville. Police said he fled the scene after the accident, which occurred at 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Dixon Avenue and 29th Street, police said.

Police said Manzanares returned a short time later and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, a misdemeanor. Arraignment details were not available.
