Cops: Hampton Bays man charged under Leandra's Law

A Hampton Bays man violated Leandra's Law when he was found driving drunk Sunday with his 14-year-old daughter as a passenger, Southampton Town police said.

Luis G. Conejo-Calvo, 51, is charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, unlicensed operation, endangering the welfare of a child and several traffic violations, police said.

He is scheduled to be arraigned Monday at Southampton Town Justice Court. Under Leandra's Law, the DWI charge is a felony.

Police said Conejo-Calvo was "found to be intoxicated" after being pulled over about 10 p.m. for failing to maintain his lane on Montauk Highway in Hampton Bays.

Leandra's Law was passed in 2009 after the death of Leandra Rosado, 11, who was killed in a DWI accident after the minivan in which she was a passenger crashed on the West Side Highway in Manhattan.

Police said the girl was released to her mother, who also was a passenger in the vehicle.
