Cops: Kings Park gas leak causes evacuation

Residents of a Kings Park neighborhood were evacuated from a handful of homes late Tuesday after a 911 caller reported a leaking 100-gallon residential propane tank outside a house on Dalewood Lane, Suffolk County police said.

The evacuations, which involved residents in about eight homes, were precautionary, police said. Police said there was no explosion and no one was injured.

The leak was reported in a 911 call at 10:24 p.m. and, police said, Fourth Precinct officers and volunteers from the Kings Park Fire Department responded to the scene. The tank, on the side of the home, was found to be leaking -- and police said firefighters hosed down the tank until workers from Paraco Gas arrived at the home and off-loaded the gas.

The Arson / Bomb Squad was notified, but was not needed, police said. The cause of the leak was not known, but no criminality was suspected.
