A motorist from Central Islip was arrested Sunday morning after an alleged road rage incident in Holtsville in which, Suffolk police said, he bashed in the windows of another car with a bat and then punched the car's driver in the face before taking off.

Police said the incident took place about 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, when a man driving east on the Long Island Expressway near Exit 57, or Veterans Memorial Highway, changed lanes and noticed a white BMW was tailgating him.

When the victim, who police did not identify, exited onto Express Drive South at Exit 62, Nicolls Road, the BMW followed and suddenly cut off the victim's vehicle -- stopping traffic and causing two other vehicles to crash, police said.

The BMW driver then got out of his car with a bat and began smashing the victim's windshield and two driver's side windows before punching the victim in the face several times, police said.

The BMW driver drove away, but the victim wrote down his license-plate number, and a witness noted the plate number and took a cellphone photo of the suspect, police said.

After an investigation, police determined the BMW driver to be Jason Parker, 25, of 59 Florence St. Parker was arrested about 8:20 a.m. Sunday and was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, third-degree assault and third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle.

The victim was taken to Stony Brook University Hospital to be treated. The occupants of the vehicles that crashed were not injured, police said.

Parker was scheduled to be arraigned at First District Court in Central Islip Monday.
