Cops: Man attacked on Riverhead street

A 26-year-old Riverhead man was hospitalized Friday after being attacked and beaten during an early morning robbery attempt by a man and woman, Riverhead Town police said.

Police said the victim, identified as Ervin Guzman, was walking to work on Sweezy Avenue at about 6:15 a.m. when he was approached by the couple near Pulaski Street.

The woman pointed a gun at Guzman, police said. The man then demanded Guzman hand over money.

Police said the man then hit Guzman in the face and head with "a large rock," knocking him to the ground. The man then continued to strike Guzman with the rock, demanding money, police said -- but fled with the woman when the two were scared off by a passing car. Guzman then walked home and called police.

Police said Guzman was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment of facial, head and shoulder injuries.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to call the Riverhead Police Department at 631-727-4500. The investigation into the attack is continuing.
