A newspaper delivery man discovered the body of Hernan Rodriguez, 34, next to a handgun in a Bellport commercial building's parking lot at 3:50 a.m., more than three hours after the bloody attack on Marlin Aguilar, 22, said Det. Sgt. Bryan McMenemy.
Police said it was unclear how Rodriguez, who has a history of threats against his wife, Rosa Santos, 31, got into the Harrison Avenue home shortly after 12:30 a.m. carrying a machete and a handgun. He confronted Aguilar in a hallway, slashing him repeatedly in the face with the blade and cutting Aguilar's hand as Aguilar tried to defend himself.
Aguilar "is cut several times in the face and cut to the point where his ear is really severed," McMenemy said.
Santos and her daughter, 15, rushed to defend Aguilar and were also threatened by Rodriguez, police said. Neither was hurt. The daughter called 911 as Rodriguez, a factory worker, fled the house. Police were searching for Rodriguez when his body was found on Farber Drive. Police said Rodriguez killed himself with a shot to the head. It was unclear Wednesday night if he had the gun legally. His car was found parked near Santos' home.
In June, a Suffolk judge issued an order of protection for Rodriguez to stay away from Santos, police said. In July, he was arrested after police said he threatened his wife at her home with a knife and was charged with criminal contempt and harassment. They had two children.
Aguilar was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. An update on his condition was not available Wednesday night.
