Cops: Man killed crossing Copiague street

Police are searching for the driver of a car involved in a late-night hit-and-run that left a man dead in Copiague.

The accident happened just before 10:30 p.m. Thursday on Sunrise Highway at Bayview Avenue, Suffolk County police said. Police said the victim is a homeless man, Jose Hernandez, 38, who was struck as he attempted to cross Sunrise.

Police said Hernandez was struck by two eastbound vehicles, the first of which fled the scene. The second vehicle was a 1997 Mercury Cougar, driven by James Diez, 66, of West Babylon, who remained at the scene, police said. Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

No description was available of the first vehicle that police said struck Hernandez. That vehicle fled eastbound on Sunrise, police said.

Police ask anyone with information about the hit-and-run to call First Squad detectives at 631-854-8152 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will remain confidential, police said.
