A Medford man was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and weapons possession after he shot his neighbor's dog with a BB gun, police said.

The shooting occurred on Lincoln Road in Medford at about 7 p.m. Sunday night, Suffolk County police said.

The dog, a German shepherd, was shot in the nose.

Police described the injuries only as non-life-threatening.

Alleged shooter Martin Frey, 54, of 84 Lincoln Rd., was arrested and charged with animal cruelty and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon after officers found him in possession of a gravity knife, police said.

He is scheduled for arraignment Monday in First District Court in Central Islip.

Police said that arriving at the scene after a 911 call, the officers, Ettore Naclerio and Michael Cafarella, found the dog with its nose bleeding -- a BB lodged in it.

It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.
