Cops: Police officer, driver injured in Shirley crash

A police officer and the 19-year-old driver of another car were hospitalized with minor injuries after a Friday morning accident in Shirley, Suffolk County police said.

The two-car crash involved a marked patrol unit from the Seventh Precinct. Police did not immediately identify the officer -- or the other driver -- involved in the crash on the William Floyd Parkway near Surrey Circle at about 9:30 a.m.

The officer was transported to Stony Brook University Hospital, while the other driver was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue.

Both had minor injuries, police said. No one else was injured in the crash.

Police initially said both the 19-year-old and the police officer were taken to Brookhaven.

The northbound William Floyd Parkway remained closed in the area around Surrey Circle at 11:30 a.m.

Police said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
