Cops probe fatal Bellport motorcycle crash

Fifth Squad detectives are investigating a Bellport crash on Wednesday that killed a motorcyclist who hit a bus and then a sport utility vehicle, Suffolk County police said.

The male rider of a 2002 Yamaha was driving north on Station Road "at a high rate of speed" at about 9:22 p.m. when he "apparently lost control" and hit a 1988 MCI bus and then a 2008 Range Rover, police said in a Thursday news release.

The motorcyclist was pronounced dead at the scene by a physician assistant from the Office of the Suffolk County Medical Examiner.

Police are withholding the name of the motorcyclist, pending family notification, a police spokeswoman said Thursday.

Neither the driver of the bus, Ronald Grant, 66, of Port Orange, Fla., nor James Alden, 23, of East Northport, was injured.

Both Grant, who was making a left turn into the driveway of a bus depot, and Alden were driving south on Station Road, near Woodside Avenue, police said.

The motorcycle and the Range Rover were impounded for safety checks. The bus was inspected at the scene by Suffolk County Police Department Motor Carrier Safe-T Section, and the bus driver was issued several summonses.

Detectives ask anyone with information to call the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552.
