Smith was driving west on the Sunrise Highway North Service Road in a 2012 Ford 150 pickup "when he veered off the roadway and crashed through a fence," police said in the release. "The vehicle continued across the westbound side of Sunrise Highway, through the median and across the eastbound side of the road before coming to a stop on the grass on the south side of the highway."

Smith was taken by Center Moriches Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center where he was pronounced dead, police said.
