Cops: Southold cops charge 2 with DWI after traffic stops

Two stops for vehicle equipment infractions resulted in drunken driving arrests Sunday by Southold Town police.

The first arrest followed a traffic stop for a non-working tail light, police said.

The second was after a traffic stop of a driver whose car had no front license plate, police said.

Arrested were Sergio Garcia Belmonte, 31, of Brooklyn, and William Montefusco, 48, of Mattituck, police said. Each was charged with driving while intoxicated.

Additionally, Montefusco was charged with having no front license plate, police said.

Arraignment details for each man was not available.

Police said that Belmonte was stopped on Route 48 in Greenport at about 12:30 a.m. after a patrol officer noticed his car had a rear taillight out.

Montefusco was stopped on Pacific Street in Mattituck at about 7:40 p.m., after an officer noticed his front license plate was missing, police said.
