A taxi driver was killed in a one-car crash into a utility pole on Route 25A in East Setauket early Friday, police said.

The driver of the cab, operated by Islandwide Taxi, was identified as Wayne Bracone, 58, of Ridge. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Suffolk County police said the cab was westbound on Route 25A when it struck the utility pole at 2:10 a.m. The cab, a 2001 Ford, was not carrying any fares.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation, police said.

The highway was closed for the investigation between Gnarled Hollow and Old Town roads until about 1 p.m. The cab was impounded for a safety check.

A woman answering the telephone at the company's office said there was no comment on Bracone's death.

Police ask anyone with information to call Sixth Squad detectives at 631-854-8652 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. With Gary Dymski
