Cops: Woman kept $800 in Hampton Jitney fare

An employee of the Hampton Jitney bus service was arrested on a charge of petty larceny Thursday for allegedly selling tickets to trips and pocketing the money, Southampton Town police said.

Karen B. Wilson, 42, of Jamaica, Queens, was arrested Thursday about 8:30 p.m., police said, after an investigation revealed she took about $800 in fares.

Police first received a tip on Aug. 2 that an employee of the luxury motor coach service in Southampton was selling bus tickets and keeping the money, said Det. Sgt. Lisa Costa.

An investigation determined that from June through early August Wilson had sold tickets on several occasions but kept the money, Costa said.

Wilson has worked for the company for two years, and Costa said police are trying to determine whether there were any earlier instances of stolen fares.

A call to the company seeking information on Wilson's employment status was not immediately returned.

Wilson was issued an appearance ticket and released on her own recognizance. She is scheduled to be back in Southampton Town Justice Court Aug. 22.
