Cops: Woman killed in head-on crash with PSEG truck in Flanders

A Hampton Bays woman was killed Thursday morning when her SUV was hit head-on by a PSEG truck that crossed over into her lane of traffic in Flanders, Southampton Town police said.

Barbara Tocci, 47, was pronounced dead at the accident scene, in the southbound lanes of Flanders Road near Spinney Road, shortly before 8 a.m., police said.

The driver of the PSEG utility truck, Michael Pepe, 53, of Bayport, was taken by ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center, where he was treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said.

The woman's 2000 Ford Explorer and the worker's 2005 GMC utility truck were impounded for safety checks, and State Police were assisting in the accident investigation, Southampton police said.

Police said they did not expect to file criminal charges or issue summonses.

State Department of Transportation crews responded to the scene to patch potholes, but there has been no determination whether the potholes contributed to the accident, Det. Patrick M. Aube of the Southampton Town police said.

Detectives asked anyone who might have witnessed the accident to call them at 631-702-2230.
