A woman died when the small sedan she was driving stopped suddenly Wednesday in a middle lane on Sunrise Highway in West Babylon and was struck in the rear by a box truck, the Suffolk Sheriff's office said.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Kerry Kneitel said the identity of the woman was not immediately known. Why her vehicle stopped in the roadway is also unknown, Kneitel said, and is being investigated.

The crash took place on Sunrise Highway west of Little East Neck Road about 3 p.m., he said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, Kneitel said.

The truck driver, Ramis Kirlangic, 49, of Fairview, N.J., was not injured, authorities said. No charges were brought against him. He was operating a truck owned by Sarcona Management of South Carney, N.J., which delivers paper to print shops, Suffolk police said.

All westbound lanes on Sunrise Highway where the accident occurred were closed for several hours to facilitate the investigation, Kneitel said.

Suffolk detectives asked that anyone with information on the crash contact the First Squad at 631-854-8152.
