Cops: Woman seriously hurt in LIE ramp crash

A driver exiting the Long Island Expressway in Calverton failed to stop at an intersection and was involved in a crash with another vehicle Tuesday, Suffolk County police said.

Police said the woman, whose identity was not immediately released, suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, which occurred at Exit 71 at about 10:15 a.m. She was going to be airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital, police said, but poor weather conditions caused police to cancel the medical helicopter dispatched to the scene.

Instead, the woman was taken by ambulance to the Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead. Her condition was not immediately known.

Police said the other driver was not seriously injured.

The exit ramp remains closed, police said. The accident remains under investigation -- but no charges have been filed.
