A Wantagh man was seriously injured when he flipped his sport utility vehicle on the Long Island Expressway in Melville on Wednesday night, Suffolk County police said.

Christopher Wegner, 29, was driving his 1999 Ford Expedition west on the Long Island Expressway between exits 50 and 49 at about 7:45 p.m. when he lost control and overturned on the right shoulder, police said.

Wegner was taken by Suffolk County police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital with a broken hip and a broken femur, police said.

His wife, Angelica Wegner, 24, of New Hampshire, a front-seat passenger, had minor injuries, police said.

The SUV was impounded for a safety check, and the cause of the crash is under investigation, police said.
