Some or all lanes of the Long Island Expressway will be closed at Exit 61 beginning next week for night construction work near Patchogue-Holbrook Road/County Road 19 on the bridge that spans the expressway, the state transportation department said.
Beginning Tuesday, all travel lanes will be closed eastbound from Sunday through Thursday between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. and/or westbound beginning Thursday, from Monday through Friday between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., weather permitting, DOT said. Cars will be diverted to the North and South Service Roads.
All lanes could be closed in one direction or both directions, depending on the nature of the construction work on any given night, a DOT spokeswoman said.
The nightly closures are expected to continue for about four weeks, then continue intermittently as needed until the bridge project is completed, DOT said.
Currently, two southbound lanes and one northbound lane of Patchogue-Holbrook Road lanes are open and single lanes are being closed intermittently on the LIE service roads between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Sidewalks across the bridge have been temporarily eliminated but a daily pedestrian shuttle service across the bridge is available Monday through Friday 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The shuttle service can be reached by telephone at a taxi shelter on the site.
