Driver escapes serious injury after car hits tree on Northern State Parkway, bursts into flames

A man was transported to Huntington Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after officials said his car crashed into a tree Sunday and burst into flames on the Northern State Parkway in Dix Hills.

The identity of the driver was not immediately available. The crash occurred on the eastbound parkway near the Deer Park Avenue exit at 6:47 p.m., Suffolk fire officials said.

Volunteers from the Dix Hills Fire Department responded to the scene and found the vehicle, a Subaru Outback, engulfed in flames. The driver had escaped the wreckage.

A fire department spokesman said volunteers quickly extinguished the blaze. The driver was transported by a crew from the Dix Hills Rescue Squad.

The crash is under investigation.
