A driver was airlifted to a Stony Brook hospital Wednesday afternoon after a crash that briefly brought traffic to a halt on the westbound Long Island Expressway.

The unidentified victim suffered a possible spinal injury after crashing into a tree at 12:49 p.m. near Exit 61 in Holbrook, the Suffolk sheriff's office said.

The person was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Stony Brook University Medical Center.

All lanes were reopened to traffic at 1:32 p.m.
