The driver was fortunate to escape serious injury Thursday morning when a car overturned and burst into flames on an exit ramp on the Long Island Expressway in Islandia.
The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department said the crash occurred at 5:40 a.m. on the eastbound LIE at Exit 58, Old Nichols Road. They said the car overturned, then was engulfed in a fire.
The driver, who has not been identified, walked away from the crash and was transported to a hospital with what sheriffs described as injuries that were not serious. The driver's condition was not immediately known, police said.
The cause of the crash was not immediately known, either, but the state Department of Transportation reported it closed the exit ramp and the right lane of the eastbound LIE for cleanup.
