The second of two alleged drunken drivers whose vehicles crashed on Thanksgiving night, killing a Brentwood man, appeared in court Saturday.
Calixto Hernandez, 36, of 125 Timberline Dr., was held on bail of $100,000 at his arraignment Saturday in First District Court in Central Islip, where his Legal Aid attorney entered a plea of not guilty.
Suffolk police said Hernandez was driving a 1994 Isuzu Amigo east on Second Avenue in Brentwood on Thursday night when he collided with a westbound 2001 BMW that turned left in front of his vehicle.
Jose Alvarado, 35, Hernandez's cousin and a passenger in the Isuzu, was killed in the crash, which flipped the SUV on its side and threw it into a pole.
Hernandez and the driver of the BMW, Selvin Lazo-Giron, 25, of 451 Smith St., Central Islip, were charged with driving while intoxicated.
Lazo-Giron also was charged with leaving the scene of an accident without reporting it, police said. He was arrested after he and his passenger showed up at a hospital seeking treatment, police said.
According to a criminal complaint filed in court, Lazo-Giron told police he drank about seven beers before the crash. He pleaded not guilty at his arraignment Friday and was held on $100,000 bail.
