East Islip man charged with DWI in fatal crash

A 29-year-old East Islip man was arrested and charged with drunken driving after a crash Sunday afternoon that killed an 84-year-old driver in Central Islip, police said.

Charles Koukalenios, of 129 Washington St., was charged with driving while intoxicated after his arrest by detectives from the Suffolk County Police Vehicular Crimes Unit, police said early Monday in a news release. He was not arraigned Monday because he remains hospitalized, authorities said.

Police identified the victim as Mary Rogalle of Central Islip. She was pronounced dead after being transported to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore by members of the Islip Exchange Ambulance Corps.

Police said Koukalenios was driving his 2011 Chevrolet Camaro north on Carleton Avenue at about 3:30 p.m. when he crossed into oncoming traffic south of Spur Drive North, crashing into the 2002 Buick Century driven by Rogalle.

Koukalenios also was transported to Southside, where police said he was admitted with non-life-threatening injuries.

The investigation is continuing, police said.

Police are asking anyone with information regarding the fatal crash to call Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS -- or the police Vehicular Crimes Unit at 631-852-6555.
