Three people suffered minor injuries and eastbound traffic on the Long Island Expressway was shut down for hours on a summer weekend afternoon when a tractor trailer hauling crushed cars overturned, police said.

Suffolk County police closed all eastbound lanes of the LIE in Brentwood for about four hours Saturday.

The tractor trailer was traveling east on the LIE about 1 p.m. when a sedan coming off the Sagtikos Parkway pulled in front of it, a police spokeswoman said.

The tractor trailer struck the sedan, then jackknifed and overturned near Exit 53, she said.

Police initially closed all eastbound lanes of the LIE and the eastbound ramp from the Sagtikos Parkway. Two of the lanes and the ramp reopened by 3 p.m. and the rest were open by 5 p.m.

The sedan’s driver and passenger, along with the tractor trailer’s driver, were taken to Southside Hospital in Bay Shore with minor injuries. Police did not identify any of the people involved.

Police said it did not appear criminality was a factor and no charges had been issued by Saturday evening.
