A driver standing near her disabled car on the shoulder of a road in Eastport was killed Saturday night and her male companion injured in a hit-and-run crash, Suffolk County police said.
Erika Strebel, 27, of Eastport, and Edward Barton, 26, of East Moriches, were standing near Strebel's disabled 1988 Jeep on the shoulder of the eastbound lane of Montauk Highway at 9:05 p.m. when they were struck by a vehicle traveling east.
Strebel was taken by East Moriches Ambulance to Peconic Bay Medical Center in Riverhead, where she was pronounced dead.
Barton was taken by Suffolk police helicopter to Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was being treated for head and knee injuries.
Police said the driver left the scene going east in a vehicle that would have front-end damage.
