A Mattituck man was charged with firing a shotgun several times near a high school during a sports event two weeks ago, Southold police said Tuesday.
Police said Edward Hug, 28, of Pike Street was arrested after a police officer at Mattituck High School reported hearing gunshots about 5:30 p.m. on Oct. 6. Sporting events that were in progress on the athletic fields were stopped, everyone was cleared from the fields and went into the high school, police said.
Police canvassed the area and interviewed neighbors and school staff, eventually determining that the area was safe and that everyone could leave the school.
Detectives began an investigation, and determined that Hug had fired a shotgun skyward several times in his yard nearby, police said.
Hug was charged with fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and illegal discharge of a firearm.
