Feds: Ex-landlords find child porn, man arrested

A newly homeless man was arrested after his former landlords found printouts of child porn in his old apartment in Nesconset, federal authorities said Thursday.

Philip M. Godek, 57, was arrested by FBI agents Wednesday at a Medford storage facility, telling investigators that he has been attracted to young boys since he was a teenager, federal authorities said.

Godek faces a charge of receiving child pornography and a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years if convicted, said the U.S. attorney's office covering Long Island.

FBI agents searched his apartment on May 9 and found a "substantial volume" of child pornography, including printouts of naked boys and videos showing boys as young as 10 in sexual acts, according to the complaint filed by FBI agent Danielle Messineo, part of the Internet Crimes Against Children squad in the New York office.

Godek said he downloaded images of boys from the Internet and also kept them in his computers, court papers said. The FBI said they found "numerous" computers and storage devices.

He also told investigators that he emailed the images to others, the FBI said.

The suspect is unemployed and living in his car, the U.S. attorney's office said. His bail hearing has been set for Friday.

The investigation started after Godek's former landlords answered an alarm at the apartment early this month and found the pornography, federal authorities said.

They told the FBI that Godek has been a tenant for 13 years but that they hadn't seen him for three weeks, according to court papers. The landlords said he had not paid his rent for three months, the FBI said.

Godek has a prior sex offense. On April 14, 1982, in state Supreme Court in Suffolk, he was convicted of promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child, a felony, the FBI said, and he was sentenced to 5 years' probation.
