A fire destroyed a detached barn and garage area, along with five vehicles inside the structure, at a residence in Middle Island on Wednesday, Suffolk County police said.

The fire at the home on Coram-Swezeytown Road was reported at 10:08 p.m.

Police said the unidentified homeowner said he was doing "mechanical work" in the garage, but left for a short time and returned to find the structure engulfed in flames.

Volunteers from Middle Island, Coram and Gordon Heights responded, fire officials said. Police said the structure was destroyed and that three motorcycles and two other vehicles inside the garage also were destroyed.

An adjacent barn suffered exterior damage, but the nearby home was undamaged, police said. Police said that three people and five animals inside the house were safely evacuated.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Arson Squad, police said. The Town of Brookhaven Fire Marshal's Office also is investigating.

It is not clear what type of motorcycles or vehicles were destroyed.
