Graffiti mars 3 South Shore churches, police say

Three churches near North Amityville were marred by satanic graffiti Friday into Saturday, Suffolk County police said.

Someone spray-painted the symbols on Shaw Temple A.M.E Zion Church on Albany Avenue, Amityville Full Gospel Tabernacle on Brefni Street and Zion Gospel Church on Warren Street, police said in a news release Saturday.

Zion Gospel’s pastor Willard Price said Saturday the satanic image was placed on the front door. “I don’t know if it was children or adults. The only thing we can do is pray for the individual,” said Price, who has led the Copiague church for more than 20 years.

Price said he planned to remove the graffiti in time for Sunday services.

“I’m on my way to Home Depot to buy some paint remover and repaint it,” he said.

Detectives are investigating the graffiti as possible hate crimes. Anyone with information is asked to call 631-852-6323 or 800-220-TIPS. Callers’ identities will be kept confidential.
