Gun buyback Saturday in Bellport

Illegally possessed guns and assault weapons may be exchanged for cash cards Saturday in Bellport as part of a buyback program sponsored by Suffolk County and local officials.

From 10 a.m. to noon, owners may turn in their guns with no questions asked at the Lighthouse Mission, 1543 Montauk Hwy. The program is being sponsored by Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone, Suffolk police, county Legis. Rob Calarco (D-Patchogue) and Brookhaven Town Councilwoman Connie Kepert.

The cash card amount will depend on type of gun: $200 for an assault weapon, $100 for a pistol or revolving handgun, and $20 for a high-capacity clip. The funds, raised by foundations for the buyback, are limited, police said

The guns must be operable, and legally owned guns are not eligible for the buyback. Police will destroy the weapons and ammunition.
