A handgun was found Monday on the grounds of a middle school in North Amityville by workers repairing a fence, police and school officials said.
Suffolk County police determined the gun was not loaded.
An Amityville Union Free School District spokeswoman said the weapon is believed to be a .38-caliber pistol. Police said investigators would not immediately confirm the caliber.
The discovery was made on the grounds of the Edmund W. Miles Middle School on Route 110 about 10:30 a.m. by contract workers repairing a hole in a fence.
Police promptly secured the area and started a search using aviation and canine teams.
The search was a precautionary measure, police said. Officials said students were not in danger.
The investigation is continuing.
