Holtsville toddler dies after window blind chain accident

A Holtsville toddler whose father found him tangled in a window blind chain in their home has died, Suffolk police said.

The boy, identified by police as Brandon McCarthy, 2, was pronounced dead Saturday at about 3:15 p.m. after being treated in Stony Brook University Medical Center's intensive care unit.

The boy's father began performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation after finding his son at about 2:45 p.m. on Friday.

The boy's family could not be reached Saturday.

The boy had been unattended for less than 10 minutes when the father found him tangled in the metal chain of the vertical blinds in the den, said Det. Sgt. Thomas Groneman of the Suffolk Police.

The couple have two other children - a 6-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy.

Neighbors told Newsday that the father is a city correction officer.
