A humpback whale was spotted swimming in the Great South Bay on Friday morning, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society said.
The conservation society said it received a report of the whale swimming near the Robert Moses Causeway bridge, and the humpback was last seen heading west out of the inlet at 11:35 a.m., according to a statement.
Although sightings in the area are not unusual, according to AMCS, its biologists were on site, an AMCS spokeswoman said. The organization will continue to monitor the area.
The conservation society said it was working with the U.S. Coast Guard Fire Island Station, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and NOAA Fisheries to monitor the whale.
