Town Clerk Jo-Ann Raia looks forward to Huntington's 20th Valentine's Day Marriage Ceremony Marathon.
"Of all the services I provide to the public, the opportunity to join two people in a lifetime of love and commitment is the part of my job that is the most heartwarming," Raia said in a statement.
Each year, Raia performs as many marriages as she can in one day.
"I have done as many as 16, and that's really pushing it," she said. "We invite each couple to extend an invitation to their family and guests."
Local merchants donate decorations, food, gifts and services for the event each year, Raia said. Bakeries, florists, supermarkets, pharmacies and photographers typically contribute to the event. Raia buys anything that isn't covered by donations.
"The town doesn't pay for anything," she said.
The couples participate in the ceremony free of charge, and their guests are invited to the reception.
The marathon is Saturday, Feb. 14. Raia said couples need to schedule their wedding with the town clerk's office if they want to be part of the marathon. They must secure a marriage license at least 24 hours in advance of the service, or they will not be eligible.
Four weddings are booked so far for this year -- which Raia said is earlier than usual. Couples interested in participating can learn more by calling the town clerk's office at 631-351-3216.
In her 26 years as the town's marriage officer, Raia has performed more than 600 wedding ceremonies.
