Six people traveling in an ambulance, including a patient en route to a hospital, were hospitalized Thursday -- after the vehicle collided with a sport utility vehicle at the intersection of Northville Turnpike and Middle Road in Riverhead, police said.
The crash at 7:31 p.m. involved an ambulance from the Riverhead Town Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Riverhead Town police said. The driver of the Ford Explorer that collided with the ambulance also was injured, according to police.
Police said the ambulance was southbound when it collided with the westbound SUV. The patient, who was being taken to Stony Brook University Hospital, was later taken to that hospital for treatment of prior injuries.
Police said that the five others in the ambulance, as well as the driver of the Explorer, were taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center for treatment.
Their conditions were not immediately known, though police said all were expected to be treated and released.
None of the people involved in the accident were identified by police. Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to call investigators at 631-727-4500, ext. 313.
