Islip Democratic boss' wife alleges hostile workplace

The wife of the Islip Democratic chairman has filed a notice of claim against the town, run by Democratic Supervisor Philip Nolan, alleging a hostile work environment, sources said.

Melanie Young, an executive assistant in the Human Resources Department for the past two years, served the claim last week. She's married to town party chairman Ivan Young and he is a party to the complaint citing emotional stress.

Nolan said of the notice, a preliminary step toward a lawsuit: "I've heard about it, but I have not reviewed the papers yet and I'll withhold comment until I read them."

This comes several weeks after a dispute in the HR office between Young and her supervisor, Deputy Commissioner Carol Charchalis, a Republican holdover and daughter of late Nassau GOP chief Joseph Margiotta. Neither Young could be reached for comment. - Rick Brand
