Southampton woman arrested in two bank robberies, police say

A Southampton woman was arraigned Tuesday for robbing a Riverhead bank in March, days after facing a similar charge in connection with a Southampton bank robbery, authorities said.

The two bank robbery counts came after Janet Terry, 50, was arrested Friday by state police on Tadd Road in Southampton during a traffic stop.

Terry stole money from the Chase branch in Hampton Bays June 26, Southampton Town police said, and her description match the woman who robbed Suffolk County National Bank in Riverhead March 19.

She was held on a $10,000 bond or $5,000 cash after being arraigned Saturday in Southampton Justice Court on third-degree robbery and third-degree criminal possession of stolen property in connection with the robbery at Chase, authorities said.

Tuesday, she was arraigned on third-degree robbery in Riverhead Justice Court and bail was set at $15,000 cash.

Her attorney, Peter S. Smith of Northport, said Tuesday he was awaiting further details on the allegations before commenting.

Southampton Town police said its detectives worked with Riverhead Town police, State Police and Southampton Village police to identify Terry. That included reviews of surveillance video, police said.

Police said the investigation is continuing to see if evidence can connect Terry to other robberies. Detectives ask anyone with information to call Southampton police at 631-702-2230 or Riverhead police at 631-727-4500.
