An Islip woman was seriously injured in a Wednesday night accident that knocked down a utility pole and forced the closure of westbound Jericho Turnpike for about eight hours in Huntington Station, Suffolk County police and fire officials said.

Police identified the driver as Laura Moll, 47, and said she was transported to Huntington Hospital in serious condition.

The extent of her injuries was not known.

Police said Moll was driving a 2009 Nissan Maxima when she crashed into the utility poll near Longfellow Drive at 8:52 p.m. The crash closed westbound Jericho between Longfellow Drive and Beverly Road. The road was reopened at about 5 a.m.

Volunteers from the Huntington Manor Fire Department and the Huntington Community First Aid Squad responded.

Photos from the scene showed the white car, its front end destroyed, windshield smashed and air bags deployed, the utility pole sheared at the base with wires dangling over the road.

Police said the investigation is continuing.
