A Lindenhurst man was killed early Saturday and a female passenger was injured when he lost control of his car in Brightwaters, striking a utility pole and then a tree, Suffolk County police said.

John A. Koch III, 25, of North Fulton Avenue, was pronounced dead at Southside Hospital in Bay Shore.

The passenger was also taken to Southside Hospital for injuries that were not life-threatening.

The crash occurred about 1:45 a.m. when Koch, driving a 2001 Honda CRV westbound on Union Boulevard, struck a median and left the roadway, police said. The car then hit a utility pole and crashed into a tree on Union between Windsor Court and Plymouth Avenue, authorities said.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check, and the investigation is continuing.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the Third Squad at 631-854-8352 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS. All calls will be kept confidential.
