A Medford man has died of injuries sustained when his all-terrain vehicle crashed during an outing last weekend in upstate New York, authorities said.
The Otsego County Sheriff's Office said Joshua Theisen, 24, was visiting the area when the ATV he was driving crashed Sunday evening in the town of New Lisbon, 70 miles west of Albany, according to The Daily Star of Oneonta.
Theisen was in the area celebrating his girlfriend's birthday, his family said.
Deputies said Theisen lost control of the vehicle, left the road and went into a drainage ditch. He wasn't wearing a helmet and suffered a severe head injury when he was ejected from the ATV, which landed on top of him, authorities said.
Deputies said Theisen was taken to Bassett Medical Center in nearby Cooperstown, where he died Tuesday.
The Patchogue-Medford High School graduate worked as an operations manager at Marshalls, a company he had been with for nine years, his father said. Theisen rarely took a day off, but he'd gotten a few days off to celebrate his girlfriend's birthday last Friday, Paul Theisen said of his son.
Joshua Theisen lost control of the ATV near his girlfriend's family's property, his father said. "He was a very loving son and a dedicated employee. He treated his family well," Paul Theisen said.
His son had taught himself to play the guitar and modify his 2013 Mustang from watching YouTube videos, his father said. He had hoped his 2015 Mustang GT would arrive by his birthday Nov. 22.
"He was well-liked by a whole bunch of people," his father said. With Darran Simon
