Kenneth Yerves, 60, killed after medical episode in car, police say

A Montauk man died after suffering a medical emergency that caused him to crash into a bus on County Road 39 in Tuckahoe Tuesday night, police said.

Kenneth Yerves, 60, was driving down County Road 39 at about 6:30 p.m. when he lost control of his 2012 Acura, police said. He swerved into the opposite lane of traffic and hit a Suffolk County bus that was stopped to let passengers off, Southampton Town Police Lt. Susan Ralph said. None of the 12 passengers on the bus was injured.

Yerves was “unresponsive” at the scene of the crash, though police said his death was caused by the medical emergency and not the crash itself. Southampton Town Police Officer David Banks, who was the first responder, performed CPR on Yerves before he was taken to Southampton Hospital.

Traffic on County Road 39 was diverted until around 10 p.m. Tuesday night while officials investigated the accident.
