Two Lake Grove residents were displaced and a group of animals was rescued after the second floor of their home caught fire Friday night.

Centereach Fire Department Chief Robert Corley said Saturday his unit got a call about a fire at 8:03 p.m. Friday.

“Upon arrival, there was heavy smoke on the left side of the home,” Corley said.

When firefighters arrived, the man and woman who lived at the Elliott Avenue home said there were animals caged inside. One fire unit went to the home’s second floor to battle the flames, while a second crew searched the home for the animals, Corley said.

Firefighters rescued dogs, birds and goats from the home, according to reports Corley received.

Neither the two residents nor the animals were injured during the fire, but the flames caused substantial damage to the home, Corley said. Fire departments from Selden, Stony Brook and Ronkonkoma also were dispatched to help extinguish the fire, Suffolk County fire officials said.

Corley said the Lake Grove Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the fire.
