As a result of higher-than-acceptable levels of bacteria, Lake Ronkonkoma Beach has been closed to swimmers, Suffolk County health officials said Thursday.

"Bathing in bacteria-contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illness, as well as infections of the eyes, ears, nose and throat," said Dr. James Tomarken, county health commissioner, in a news release.
