LI woman, dog rescued after falling into water, cops say

A Mastic Beach woman was treated for hypothermia after she and her dog fell off a dock and were rescued Thursday, police said.

The 53-year-old woman was walking her two dogs on the corner of Forest Road East and West Riviera Drive in Mastic Beach when she and one of the dogs fell into the water about 12:20 p.m. Thursday, Suffolk County police said.

A witness, identified by the William Floyd School District as employee Cindy Lavorata, was able to rescue the dog that had fallen in, but was not able to pull out the woman. Lavorata, who was on her lunch break, called 911 and waited with the woman until Seventh Precinct patrol Officer Matthew White arrived and pulled the woman out.

The woman, who was in chest-deep water for about 10 minutes, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue by Mastic Beach Ambulance. She was treated for hypothermia, police said.
