Service on the Montauk branch has been restored after a westbound train fatally struck a person in Bayport on Tuesday night, the Long Island Rail Road said.
The westbound train from Patchogue to Babylon hit a man near the Oakwood Avenue crossing about 7:50 p.m., after leaving the Patchogue train station, LIRR spokeswoman Nancy Gamerman said.
Service was suspended in both directions between Babylon and Speonk and was restored about 10 p.m., the LIRR said. At least two trains were canceled and as of 11:30 p.m., the commuter rail warned of delays of up to 55 minutes.
No one on the train was hurt, Gamerman said, and the Bayport Fire Department bused the 13 passengers to the Sayville train station.
She said the victim was not supposed to be on the tracks and that Metropolitan Transportation Authority police were investigating.
A previous version of this story had the wrong gender for the person killed on the tracks because of incorrect information provided by the LIRR.
