A person was struck by a New York & Atlantic Railway Co. freight train near Wyandanch shortly after 10 p.m., a Long Island Rail Road spokesman said last night. Service was halted for several hours but was restored before midnight.
New York & Atlantic runs its freight trains on LIRR tracks, but representatives for the company could not be reached.
All traffic on the Ronkonkoma branch was suspended between Farmingdale and Ronkonkoma while authorities investigated the incident, resulting in delays for several LIRR trains.
The 9:15 p.m. from Penn Station to Ronkonkoma was held at Farmingdale, and the 10:11 p.m. from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station was held at Ronkonkoma. Shortly before midnight, service was restored, but some trains ran nearly an hour late in each direction.
The LIRR spokesman said it was unlikely the incident would affect the morning commute.
