The Long Island Rail Road is investigating an apparent suicide on Friday evening at the Great River station.

The LIRR on Friday said the victim had either slipped or jumped from the platform at 4:45 p.m. before being struck by a westbound Long Island Rail Road equipment train on the Montauk Branch.

But authorities have now deemed the fatality a suicide, said Salvatore Arena, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

The victim was identified as a 43-year-old woman.

The LIRR originally identified the victim as a man.
